Film Phone Squares

These are my favorite films.
I noticed that in each (except Roshomon, which is not included) there is an important phone call.
see?

Portland Squares

so as you can tell, I had a gay old time in Portland.
can't someone say "gay old time" anymore without thinking of sex?
ask your grandma what "gay old time" means
she'll tell you it has nothing to do with anal sex.

anyway

Safeway Squares

Safeway is pretty much the most boring, plastic monument to capitalism (other than the mall, of course). Produce is waxed (yeah, waxed) shit is gross, and the people there are meat-heads.
I usually go only in emergencies.
Can you imagine a problem that can only Safeway can solve?
I can't either.

Anyway
I decided to try and see the bright side.

Camera Phone Squares

I usually take my camera with me everywhere I go.
I'm not that good of a photographer
(if you're looking for a good photographer, go here, or here, or here)

Anyway, the times that I don't have my camera on me have produced some shitty camera-phone photos.
(and by "shitty", I mean "magical gems")
I think the camera phone is to 2008 what the HOLGA was to the 1980s.

Nick Avey Squares

I saw Nick Avey recently.
He was riding his bike, and looked really sad.

A while ago, I asked him to do a set of squares for me.
"Nick you're my favorite photographer, would you do a set of squares for me?"
Nick said he would.

Riding his bike all sad like that must have reminded him of how squares make people feel.
(good)
Now you know what?
Nick feels so good.
Unicorns are leaping outside of his kitchen window, and if you think I'm kidding, roll over to his house and see for yourself.

Anyway
Nick doesn't disappoint.
Every photograph in here is a little miracle.
good job pal.

consumption squares

My great pal Ondine and I decided to play a trick on the world.
The greatest trick of all.
What is it?
Why, we photographed everything we ate for a day, of course.

Ondine is on the other side of the planet, in a strange land called Switzerland.
You can read about it.
It's a real place.

Anyway -- I'm kind of obsessed with this idea of consumption, so she photographed everything she ate yesterday for me, and I did the same.

She's a better photographer than I am, and it shows.
Sorry everyone.

Shaun Slaughter Squares (S³)

I asked my pal Shaun Slaughter do do some squares too.
Shaun is the DJ/genius behind Lipstick & Vicious (two of the funnest things to do in Sacramento).
Come to think of it, hundreds of Sacrementans have Shaun to thank for getting laid.
thanks Shaun.

anyway, he's a brilliant designer too
and an overall really nice guy
and did this for me:

Michelle Suzanne Squares

So my pal Michelle did a square.
I'm impressed.
her art work is mainly vector-based, design-heavy and totally beautiful.
I like her squares, because they remind me of her. (I see a lot of Michelle). They're colorful, light-hearted, and strong compositionally.

enjoy

Olympique de Marseille vs FC Spartak Moscow Squares

This new set of squares comes form the UEFA Champions' League round of 32 game between Olympique de Marseille and FC Spartak Moscow.

I watched the game on the internet, and it was terrible quality.
As I was watching the game, I started to get really excited about the blur and distortion caused by the low-quality of the video.

I took a few snapshots of the screen, and soon became totally engrossed in the art of the game, and entirely lost track of the game itself.

I imagined that this is probably the way our parents and grandparents felt as they watched their favorite sports teams when TV was young.
was that a goal?
who has the ball?
how much time is left?
what just happened?

the blur/fuzz/lapse makes the game that much more suspensful when it's hard to see.

Bitch Squares

I asked my pal Jessica M. to do a square, because I really like the stuff she does.

Here's an excerpt from our conversation:
Me: Hey Jessica this is Richard
Jessica: Hi Richard
Me:Hi -- do you want to do an image for me?
Jessica: Yeah, sure.
Me: ok -- ready?
Jessica: What, now?

Ok. we didn't really have that conversation. That's actually from a Daniel Johnston album.
I don't talk like that anyway.

She makes incredible drawings of girls that are both feminine and eerie, and she really has a genuine talent.
totally well done.

Squares Template

Here's the template that I use for my "squares" series.
It's pretty simple, and I think you should be able to figure it out on your own.
The white square is a separate layer, so you can move it around depending on your composition.

If you make your own squares, I'll post them for you.

Composition Squares

I've been working on composition, and totally thought this was a good way to exercise. It's nice because you're totally working with composition on multiple levels (image selection, cropping, and again in image placement).
It's addicting.

Anyway, I made a template in Photoshop, so send me an email if you want to try it out.
